Publication: Atlas Curieux oder neuer und compendieuser Atlas ..., Augsburg. A 300 year old tourist map and guide of the countryside around Arras. Arras, capital of the historic Artois region between Picardy and Flanders, is one of the most beautiful and culturally attractive cities of Northern France. The birthplace of Robespierre has at its centre two cobbled squares—Place des Héros and the Grand'Place—and nearby are splendid examples of brick and stone Flemish buildings. The old abbey of St Vaast is now the cathedral. But perhaps the most fascinating sight in Arras lies below ground: les souterrains, dark passageways tunnelled under the centre of the city. The labyrinth of underground passages (boves) constitutes a veritable city beneath the town of Arras. The tunnels were begun in the 12th century and used both as a means of communication and storage and as a place of refuge, with spacious pillared chambers, as well as connecting stairways and passages. Scarce. Fold(s) as given.
