Title: A Map of Surrey Full title: Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improv’d; being a correct copy of Mr. Ogilby’s actual survey of all ye direct & principal crossroads in England and Wales: wherein are exactly delineated & engraven, all ye Cities, Towns, Villages, Churches, Seats &c. scituate on or near the Roads, with their respective distances in measured and computed miles. The sheet is engraved on two sides:- Page 95 A Map of Surrey with a description of the County, identifying the Hundreds, the number of acres, houses, parishes and market towns. Page 96 (continued from Page 72) shows The Road from London to Chichester commencing at Guilford and continuing via Godalmin (Godlyman), Chidingfold, Midhurst, West Dean and East Lavant to Chichester. Embellished with the Coasts of Arms of The Bishoprick of Chichester & of Petersfield and the Armorial Crest of the Baron of Cowdrey Place, as well as copious notes on places of interest along the way. The strip maps shows the main road and crossroads leading to various towns along the way. The engraving details the surrounding topography including churches, rivers, bridges, pastures, woods, forests and hills. On each strip is a compass rose showing the direction of travel as well as the distance, in miles, from the start point. The engravings have distinct plate marks and good margins. The engraving has been washed & pressed by a qualified conservator (see Conservation Services link on the Home Page).
