The upper engraving is a depiction of Eutin (pronounced oy-teen), located east of Hamburg, between Lubeck and Kiel in northern Germany, was founded as a colonial settlement in 1143. Thanks to its geographical position, Eutin offered a maximum of safety and thus developed so quickly that it acquired the status of a town as early as 1256 or 1257.
The lower engraving shows the town of Tonder in Demark.
"...Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terrarum, stands as one of the greatest monuments of late 16th and early 17th Century European cartography. Published in Cologne, Germany in a series of six volumes between 1572 and 1617/8, and, when finally completed, comprising nearly 550 City views and plans, the Civitates is also one of the most valuable sources for the study of Renaissance urban cartography.
