Description

An elegantly designed map of the island of Japan drawn by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72).

Bellin during his over fifty years of work in the French Hydrographic Service was appointed the first ‘Ingenieur hydrographe de la Marine.’ His large output of charts of all parts of the world are well known for their high quality and attractive appearance.

This rendering introduced the best general outline of Japan of the eighteenth century, based on information from Kaempfer and Scheuchzer who had traveled extensively in Japan and annotated a Japanese woodblock map. One of the highest quality maps of Japan from the mid 18th Century showing provinces, islands, towns, mountains, rivers, and islands.
