Description

Viertzig Iarige Reysen Der Kinder Israel Aus Egypten Durch Das Rote-Meer Und Wusten Biss Ins Gelobte Land Canaan. From a German/Swiss bible.

This antique map is almost exactly the same as N Vischer's map from c. 1657 (see Poortman #120) but with German text and omitting the author's name. The map is oriented with north to the right. Encompassing the Promised Land and Egypt it traces the flight of the Children of Israel out of Egypt, their wandering through the desert and their route to the Land of Canaan (Exodus). Moses is depicted on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. Along the bottom of the map are a number of illustrations (from left to right): (i) two sides of a shekel coin, (ii) some temple vessels, (iii) a cartouche flanked by Moses and Aaron showing the Tabernacle surrounded by the twelve tribes of Israel, (iv) the Ark of the Covenant. German text on verso.
