Description

Dinant is a historic Walloon town on the River Meuse overlooked by sheer limestone cliffs. The Citadelle de Dinant, perched on the summit 500 metres (1,640 feet) above the town, can be reached either by toiling up the 408 steps cut by the French in 1577, , or by taking the funicular railway. The citadel dates back to the 4th century, though the present buildings were mostly the work of the Dutch from 1818 to 1821. Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, was born in Dinant in 1814.
