Title: Turones vulgo Tours le jardin de France / Andegavum vulgo Angiers. Publication: Civitates Orbis Terrarum 1598. Engraver: Braun & Hogenberg Two fine engravings of French provincial Cities. 1. Tours is the provincial capital of the Indre-et-Loire departement, on the lower reaches of the river Loire, between Orleans and the Atlantic coast. The name of the city comes from the ancient Gallic tribe called the Turones. In Roman times it was known as Turonensis. The modern name, Tours, coincidentally corresponds to the French word tours, 'towers'. 2. Angers is situated along the both banks of Maine River and the southern suburb is situated along the Loire River. The city is the provincial capital of Anjou and is considered as one of the most beautiful cities in France. The most notable buildings are the magnificent twin-spiraled Cathedral of Saint Maurice (12th-13th century) and the massive Castle of Angers (early 13th century). Around the castle are 17 cylindrical towers which remind on military history of the town. "...Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terrarum, stands as one of the greatest monuments of late 16th and early 17th Century European cartography. Published in Cologne, Germany in a series of six volumes between 1572 and 1617/8, and, when finally completed, comprising nearly 550 City views and plans, the Civitates is also one of the most valuable sources for the study of Renaissance urban cartography.
