Publication: Civitates Orbis Terrarum 1598.

Poitiers is a town located in west central France. It is a commune and the capital of the Vienne departement and of the Poitou-Charentes région. Poitiers is situated on the Clain River. This engraving shows a beautiful panoramic view of the City. Below are two further engravings; the one on the left showing a neolithic monument with tourists engraving their names in the stone cap whilst the one on the right shows a fortified town of Mont Henri to the north of Orleans.

"...Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terrarum, stands as one of the greatest monuments of late 16th and early 17th Century European cartography. Published in Cologne, Germany in a series of six volumes between 1572 and 1617/8, and, when finally completed, comprising nearly 550 City views and plans, the Civitates is also one of the most valuable sources for the study of Renaissance urban cartography. " - Roderick M Barron.
