Title: 'Le table de...toute l'Afrique'. Printed in Basle c. 1552. French text. A cornerstone woodcut map of the whole of the African continent. The names of general geographical areas are marked with much of the landmass filled with rivers and vignettes of mountains, crowns for kingdoms, an elephant and ‘Monoculi’ or Cyclops. Just to the west of the ‘Caput bone sper’ [Cape of Good Hope] is a large Nordic sailing vessel and a panel of French text that describes the continent. This is the first collectible map to show the entire continent of Africa. The condition is excellent for such an old map with no significant faults.
