Description

Title: Grundriss von St. Petersburg und den nachsten Umgebungen

Sheets V & X of Scheda's Generale Karte von Europe. A detailed plan of St. Petersburg, which at that time was the capital of Imperial Russia. Known as the Venice of the North, St. Petersburg was founded on 27th May 1703 by Tsar Peter 1 Romanov (Peter the Great). This was the day when the corner-stone was laid for the building of the Peter & Paul Fortress. The first permanent bridge was built in 1850, those shown on the plan are all pontoon bridges. To the left of the plan is a numbered index of the major landmarks. The plan is inserted on to a map of the Urals.
The map has been dissected into 8 sections and laid on linen. A finely executed strap work border surrounds the map. Scarce.
