Description

Title: Karte vom Heiligen Lande und Syrien. Publication : D. Richard Pococke's Beschreibung des Morgenlandes und einiger andern lander,

An elegant and very detailed engraving of the Holy Land. A dotted line shows the route Pococke took exploring the length and breadth of the region.

This engraving was taken from a German version of 'A Description of the East and some other Countries' by Richard Pococke. Richard Pococke set out from England in 1737 and over the next several years he toured upper and lower Egypt, ascended Vesuvius twice, explored the Alps in the region of Chamonix, visited the Holy Land, traveled around Crete (where he climbed Mt Ida and rescued a German enslaved by the Turks) and finally returned home in 1740.

Bottom left margin added where it was cut out to fold into the book.

Ref: Laor 573, scarce
