Description

Title: 'Carte Generale du Canada en Petit Point'.

This map is from the Baron de la Hontan's famous best seller of his travels in North America. The Great Lakes, Michigan, St. Lawrence River, the English settlements including a Manat for Manhattan, and Baston for Boston are shown. It also illustrates Ft. de S. Joseph near present day Port Huron, Michigan, before there was a Detroit. Ft. Niagara and the country of the Iroquois in Western New York.

La Hontan went to Canada in 1683 as a marine lieutenant. He participated in an unsuccessful campaign against the Iroquois Indians on Lake Ontario in 1684 and commanded Fort St. Joesph. He made a great influence on map makers such as de l'Isle who included parts of Lahontan's maps in his own.

In excellent condition with vertical folds as issued.

Ref: entry 285 in Kershaw. This was published in 1728, and is the third state.
