Title: L'Amerique. Publication: Geographie Universelle ... Author: Buffier. C A very interesting map showing California as an Island, Spanish New Mexico, a large Spanish Florida, French Canada extending below the Great Lakes, British America shown as a small coastal strip. South America shows Granada or Terra Firma, Brazil, Amazon as a separate entity, Argentina Paraguay as La Plata, Patagonia as Magellanique (Magellan Land), Chile, and Uruguay. The map includes many place names around coastal regions and includes the Solomon Islands and New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean. Land and island contours are still very speculative, but the Equator and the Tropics are indicated along with the Arctic Circle in the north and Terre Australe in the south. Showing the image of California as an island was an error continued by cartographers for almost a 100 years from the early 17th century to the early 18th century, when it was finally disproved by Father Kino, a Jesuit Priest who walked from the mainland across to the coast showing it could be done Folds as given. Left margin partially cut.
