Description

Full title: Terra Firma et Novum Regnum Granatense et Popayan.

This magnificent sea chart and land map was first published by William Blaeu in 1608 for his “Het Licht der Zeevaerdt”—The Light of Navigation. It was enlarged to folio form in the 1620’s by William and continued to be printed in this form until the Blaeu plates were destroyed by fire in the early 1670”s. The originator of this engraving is confirmed by the “Amstelodami, Guiljelmus Blaeus excudit” which appear between the cartouche and mileage scale.

The topographical detail is superb, with the Andes fairly leaping off the page, while the beautifully coloured and designed cartouches and compass roses add to the map's decorative appeal. German text on verso.

The map is in excellent condition with wide margins and bright colours on strong paper.
