Description

Title: 'Delineatio omnium orarum. totius Australis partis Americae. ', van Langren/ van Linschoten, 1595.

A classic Dutch map, published in Linschoten’s 1596 travel book, "Itinerario." One of the most magnifcent examples of 16th century Dutch cartography.

The map extends from the Southeast U.S., titled Florida to Tierra del Fuego with north oriented to the right. This map is highly detailed, especially along the coasts, where hundreds of place names are given. Vignettes in the interior include images of Brazillian cannibals, Patagonian giants, long eared dogs, and a strange lion-like creature with a human facial features. Two elaborately engraved title cartouches, Galleons under sail, sea monsters and a compass rose make this an excellent example of the golden age of Dutch cartography.

In excellent condition with a minor (5 cm) paper reinforcement to the back of the map at the crease.
