Description

Title: ' A new map of the counties ten miles round the Cities of London & Westminster & Borough of Southwark'. Publication: A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminter and the Borough of Sothwark, Stow
Engraver: R W Seale

This fine engraved topograhical view is from John Stow's work 'A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminter and the Borough of Sothwark'. The work was originally published in 1598 and 1603. Many editions followed which included revisions, additions, and enlargements, both by the original author and others including John Strype. This engraving is from the Sixth edition printed in 1754-1755. "The Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster (1598 and 1603) is a diligent and valuable piece of work, at once faithful and enthusiastic. For Stow, London was the fairest, largest, richest and best inhabited city in the world, and he gave it all the care and study which he thought it deserved." (Bartleby.com)
