Description

Published in "Lo Stato Presente Di Tutti I Paesi Epopoli Del Mondo, Volume XIII, Della Scozia, E Dell’Irlanda”, G. Albrizzi, Venezia, 1743.

A detailed and ornate map of Scotland with several folds as issued.

The map belonged to Volume XIII of the Italian translation of an extensive series on the geography, history and culture of several parts of the world. The original English edition was written by Thomas Salmon (1679-1767): “Modern History, or The present state of all Nations”. The original English work consists of three volumes and was published in 1727. A Dutch translation, in 44 volumes, appeared in Amsterdam between 1729 and 1820, published by Isaak Tirion. The Italian translation appeared in 23 volumes, from 1738 till 1761, and was published in Venice as well as in Napels. The work was translated into German from 1748 onwards. All but one of the maps in the first 10 volumes of the Italian translation are attributed to (or copied from) Isaac Tirion who produced the maps for the Dutch language version, and inspired those in the German edition. However, geographic credit is given to Guillaume de L'Isle, member of the Academy des Sciences in 1702 and in 1718 made "Premier Géographe du Roi".

Blank reverse side. Beautiful cartouche in top left corner. Engraved area ca 32 x 38 cm (12.6" x 15"). Paper size ca 35 x 42,5 cm (13.8" x 16.8"). Small tear in fold at right side (ca 0,5 cm). Uncutted and non flattened. This map is in excellent condition.
