A small and very decorative double hemisphere map. California is depicted as an Island with a flat northern coast. Australia includes the western and northern coasts and the discoveries of Van Diemen. There are numerous Pacific islands including much of the western coastline of New Zealand. Five astronomical diagrams decorate the top of the map. At the base are a pair of globes and an armillary sphere, which is surrounded by putti using a variety of scientific instruments. The background is taken from a map by Homann displaying natural phenomenon such as volcanoes, whirlpool, earthquake (shown as a tidal wave), waterspouts, sun-set and a rainbow. The map was included in a geography book entitled ‘REALES STAATS- ZEITUNGS- UND CONVERSATIONS- LEXICON’ by Johann HUBNER.

Hübner's Zeitungs-Lexicon is a pioneering example of the 'conversation-lexicon', an early eighteenth-century encyclopedia designed to appeal to the educated classes rather than to scholars. First published in 1704, it was in fact compiled by Philipp Balthazar Sinold von Schütz, but is commonly referred to by the writer of the preface, Johann Hübner (1668-1731), Rector of the Johanneum in Hamburg. It is a simplified handy reference book of short entries, similar to our modern one-volume desk-encyclopedias and offers a wealth of information on a range of subjects including science, medicine, economics and agriculture among others. The work is a mixture between an encyclopedia and a dictionary of the German language, with detailed descriptions of the proper terminology used in business and science. - The eight finely engraved plates illustrate a world map, architecture, military equipment, and heraldry, among others.
