Description

Title: Carte De La Californie Suivant 1. La Carte manuscrite de l'Americque de Mathieu Neron Pecci olen dressee a Florence en 1604, 2. Sanson 1656, 3. De l'Isle Amerique Sept. 1700...

A striking example of 5 maps of California engraved by the eminent French cartographer De Vaugondy, for the Denis Diderot (1713-84) edition of Encyclopedie, Paris 1770.

This map shows the historical evolution of the various mappings of the California region, including the work of Pecci (1604), Sanson (1656), De L'Isle (1700), Kino (1705), and the Society of Jesuits (1767).

Diderot's maps were intended to further an understanding of the Western Coast of America, and North East Asia, during a period immediately before Cook's first voyage where numerous theories abounded on these regions, especially the NW Coast of America.

The map is in excellent condition with a dark impression. An essential map for California collectors. (Ref: tooley 1988)
