Description

Amsterdam 1625. A double-page engraved map of the Asian continent with French text on the verso.

This map is a Hondius update of the Mercator map of 1595. Sources that appear to have been used are the Portuguese Jesuits Luis Teixeira (1595) for details of Japan, and Luis Jorgede Barbuda (1584) for details of China.

Hondius has here corrected many of Mercator’s errors, although the map still has many interesting early features. Korea is shown as a very long island and Japan is depicted on the Ortelius teixeria model (1595) with three principal islands. In India, the Gulf of Cambay is very exaggerated.

The map is beautifully hand-colored with strapwork cartouches, ships, and numerous sea monsters and is in very good condition. Please note that the map is on flat and clean paper (creases in the image are caused by the scanner lid and are not on the map).
