Title: 'Carte D'Amerique Divisees en ses Principales Parties', COVENS & MORTIER / DELISLE, G. / D'ANVILLE This map depicts an important stage in the mapping of the American Northwest. It is heavily based on De l’Isle’s cartography but adds to it the Russian discoveries in the Northwest. There are several fascinating and erroneous features to the map, also drawn largely from De l’Isle. One is the addition of a large Mer De l’Ouest North of Cap Blanc. The other is a nonexistent series of rivers and lakes stretching west from the Great Lakes, whose discovery De l’Isle attributed to the Baron Lahontan, an explorer whose sociology of the native populations proved to be more scientific than his cartography. Europeans in search of a water route to the Pacific through North America would have received reports such as these with high hopes. The map is in very good condition on strong clean paper with wide margins. There is one pin prick hole and a half cm area of paper thining. Ref: Tooley #20
