Description

Title: 'Amerique Septentrionale . . .'

A landmark map and one of the first to delineate the five separate Great Lakes in a recognizable fashion. Also the first map to name Lake Superior and Lake Ontario.

With reference to the accounts of Father Paul Ragueneau and Jean Nicollet, Montreal makes it's first on a map and the first reference to N. Suede, the Swedish colony founded in 1638. Nouvelle Amsterdam is shown as an island. In the Southwestern area Santa Fe., Navajo, Apache and Taosij, also appear for the first time, derived from the Fra. Alonso de Benavides explorations. A most influential map.

In very good condition with a minor repair to the lower center.

Ref: Burden 294 (state 3, McLaughlin 12).
