Title: 'A New Improved Map Of Cornwall...'. Printed for Carington Bowles in ST. Pauls Church Yard, Robert Wilkinson in Cornhill, & Rob. Sayer in Fleet Street. An elegant large map of Cornwall with an inset of the Isles of Scilly. According to R. Baynton-Williams: “The finest county maps to be published in the 18th. Century were in the LARGE ENGLISH ATLAS with maps by Emanuel Bowen, Thomas Kitchin, and R.W. Seale, published in 1755……. The Maps are elaborately detailed, and are by far the most accurate to have appeared to this time. They give notes on the features of the counties and items of historical interest, both on the map and round the borders. The map has a key and shows castles, seats, rectories, vicarages, religious houses, post stages, charity schools, mines and so on. Market days are annexed to the towns and mileages are given in circles between each town. Each borough town is marked with stars which denote the number of its representatives in Parliament. Rococo cartouches illustrated the country’’s natural resources, and show scenes of harvesting, hop-growing, mining, fishing, dairy farming, and various industries including steel and manufacturing fabrics. There is a very nice large and elaborate title cartouche in top left hand corner, a compass indicator, and the scale in British Statue miles. There are also graduations of longitude and latitude within the printed border. In excellent condition.
