Description

Title: 'A New and Correct map of ye Whole World by H Moll Geor. Is most humbly dedicated to Luke Gardiner Esq Deputy Vice Treasurer and Receiver General of His Majesties Revenue in the Kingdom of Ireland. By his most obedient serveant G. Grierson'.

An extremely rare Irish copy of the Herman Moll world map from 'The World Described'. This map is known in only one other copy held by the Royal Geographical Society in London. Correspondence with Dennis Reinhartz (author of 'Herman Moll and his Intellectual Circle') has determined that this is the 1730 edition. There are no known copies of the 1745 edition.

According to Reinhartz, 'Two editions of THE WORLD DESCRIBED...were done by the Dublin publisher Geroge Grierson (1680-1753)... all of the maps in the Irish editions were completely re-engraved, even to the point of understandably having been rededicated to contemporary Irish notables. The Grierson atlas had new and/or changed cartouches, dedications, details, and comments. It also showed obvious erasers and additions, and some of the maps were updated.'

A magnificent Mercator’s projection map with a decorative title cartouche at the top left. This is a copy from the largest atlas-map of the world published in an English atlas and is consequently uncrowded whilst being of good detail and with numerous annotations, including Moll’s “advertisement” in which he promotes his maps “very correctly done” at the expense of Moses Pitt’s “Old and Incorrect Maps for his Pretended New Atlas”. California is shown as a large island, Australias east coast is uncharted, ocean currents, monsoon and wind directions are indicated and inset maps detail the degrees of magnetic variation and the North Pole.

The map is in very good condition with original colour and good margins. A small amount of facsimile work has been undertaken to the left fold with reference to the RGS copy. A remarkably rare map that is unlikely to be seen on the market again.
