1746 - From Jacques Robbe’s Methode pour Apprendre Facilement la Geographie. A fine set of World and five continents by Nicolas De Fer. Carte Generale du Globe Terrestre: A decorative double hemisphere world map that has many interesting features. Nouvelle Holland is only partially defined, California is an island and there is much uncertainty about the Pacific and the American North West. Amerique Septentrionale: A wonderful small map of North America, showing California as an island. Much of the central area of the continent is labeled "Floride," while the West is styled "Noveau Mexique." Two natives support the cartouche in the upper left corner of the map. McLaughlin,The Mapping of California as an Island: 100. Amerique Meridionale: A decorative map of the continent that appears to cling to the old notions of a vast southern continent. Tierra del Fuego is represented as being almost insular and is semi-detached from the southern 'Terres Inconnues'. L'Afrique: A very handsome chart of Africa that is full of speculation concerning the largely unexplored interior of the continent. L'Asie: Finely detailed with an interesting depiction of Japan and the North Eastern coast. L'Europe: A well engraved map with an interesting placement of Iceland and an early French positioning of the prime meridian. Overall this is a very rare set of maps by a distinguished French cartographer and they are seldom seen on the market. Folds as issued which should barely be noticable when framed and otherwise in very good condition.
